A footed stoneware compote in a hand-painted harlequin pattern — matte black, burnished gold, and slate triangles wrapping bowl and stem without a repeat. The gilding catches low light; the form stands on its own with nothing in it.
I spotted this in a dealer's stall at a flea market outside Copenhagen, half-wrapped in newspaper under the table — he thought the gilding was worn; I thought it was the whole point. It held keys by my front door for three years, which is probably not what its maker intended, and exactly what it was good at.

Material — Glazed stoneware, hand-applied gilt
Condition — Very good; light wear to gilding consistent with age
