A footed stoneware compote in a hand-painted harlequin pattern — matte black, burnished gold, and slate triangles wrapping bowl and stem without a repeat. The gilding catches low light; the form stands on its own with nothing in it.
I spotted this in a dealer's stall at a flea market outside Copenhagen, half-wrapped in newspaper under the table. What I love is the gilding. It catches low light the way nothing new ever does.
Dimensions — 8" H × 7.5" Dia
Material — Glazed stoneware, hand-applied gilt
Condition — Very good; light wear to gilding consistent with age
